Episode I: Character Bios

I wrote these bios from my own head using several resources, mainly the Visual Dictionaries and the movies themselves. The information mentioned is very spoilery for the said movie so read at your own discretion. DO NOT duplicate this information without my consent.

Queen/Padme Amidala - the young Queen of Naboo has spent most of her 14 years learning to be a ruler, learning to serve her people. When the Trade Federation blockades her peaceful world she does all in her power not to cooperate with them. When two Jedi appear she quickly goes with them to Coruscant to plead her case before the Senate, but when the ship gets damaged she is less than reluctant to let the Jedi seal her fate and travels along with the Jedi Master Qui-Gon disguised as a handmaiden. She disapproves greatly of Qui-Gon trusting their lives and her planet into the hands of a little boy. Once at Coruscant she calls for the re-election of the current Chancellor on the advice of Senator Palpatine and leaves to fight back on Naboo.
Jar Jar Binks - is a Gungan, an exiled one at that for his clumsiness. He meets up with eh two Jedi and leads them down to the Gungan city under the lake and travels with them to Tatoonine, Coruscant and back to Naboo where he helps forge a peace between the native people of the planet. He is brash, mostly annoying but an integral character in this episode, he represents that even the most 'stupid' feeling of people can do wondrous things.
Nute Gunray - slimy Trade Federation viceroy, who wants power. When he is told by Darth Sidious to blockade Naboo he does so quickly and easily with his droid army, having no qualms what so ever. If there is a profit to be made, he's there. Though aligning with a Sith Lord might not be the most comfortable of things, the Viceroy is happy doing Darth Sidious's bidding.
Jedi Council - consists of 12 members: Mace Windu, Yoda, Yarael Poof, Saesee Tim, Even Piell, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Eeth Koth, Oppo Rancisis, Depa Billaba, Adi Gallia, Plo Koon and Yaddle. They are the 'ruling body' of the Jedi, they are the point of call for the Republic and they dispatch appropriate Jedi on missions as well as screen potential Jedi. They are Masters of the Force, the wisest and most respected of the Jedi.
Qui-Gon Jinn - Jedi Master, apprentice to Count Dooku, takes Obi-Wan Kenobi as his apprentice. He is brash, goes against the rules often but has a deep understanding of the Force. He would be on the Jedi Council only if his ways weren't so unorthodox. He wields his green lightsabre with ease and teaches Obi-Wan the ways of the Force. When he encounters Anakin on Tatoonine, Qui-Gon is instantly drawn to the boy and sees his potential. He pleads with the council to train the boy and is disappointed when they refuse. When he returns to Naboo with the Queen, he is killed by the Sith, Darth Maul. Before he dies Qui-Gon instructs Obi-Wan to train Anakin. More on Qui-Gon.
Obi-Wan Kenobi - apprentice to Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan is a mere Padawan in this episode. He disagrees with his master on many things but deeply respects him none the less. He finds his Master's way a little too unorthodox but goes along with them anyway. He is still a 'newbie' in the Force, doing silly things from time to time but by the end he is a mature Jedi Knight. He disapproves of Qui-Gon trusting Anakin and is deeply hurt when Qui-Gon dismisses him for the younger boy. When Qui-Gon explains Obi-Wan is great full, but he never really gets to say how much as his Master gets killed by Darth Maul. Obi-Wan quickly kills Darth Maul and promises that he will train Anakin, much to the disappointment of Yoda.
Darth Maul - Dark Lord of the Sith, apprentice to Darth Sidious, Darth Maul is one of the most dangerous Sith of all time. He is fast and deadly and extremely skilled with his double ended lightsabre. He pushes himself to the absolute limit at all times and prides himself on every kill that he makes. His tattooed face is menacing, as is his sheer Force power. He manages to kill Qui-Gon Jinn, Jedi Master but is in turned killed by the younger Obi-Wan who had the time to watch how the Sith Lord fought and moved.
Senator Palpatine - having risen through the ranks, he represents 36 worlds, including his home world of Naboo, in the Galactic Senate. He has developed a reputation as being separate from intrigue and corruption making it only natural that he is the chosen leader of the senate with Chancellor Valorum disposed. He does what is needed to be done rather than pleasing those that make 'protocol'. He is a little darker in thought and ambitious, but to all those around him they do not suspect. He takes a shining to young Anakin from the onset.
Sebulba - winner of many pod races and one of the best pod racers in the galaxy, he is feared and respected alike. He often cheats to win, damaging the other racers so that he has a clear shot, his pod racer whilst having a top speed of over 515kmph has many secret weapons designed to aid him to victory. He is rude, abrasive and determined to win, he has no qualms in trying to intimidate those he sees as 'lesser' than him. The Dug has met his match in young Skywalker though.
Darth Sidious - Dark Lord of the Sith, his identity and origins are unknown, he is the 'brains' behind the whole operation but for what purpose? His dark intent is never let on, what could his intentions be. He happily sends his apprentice Darth Maul into the fray, a test for the young Sith so to say. Though he will always find another to replace any apprentices that are lost.
Anakin Skywalker - a slave on the planet Tatoonine to Watto, a junk yard dealer. He is nine years old and has extraordinary abilities for fixing things and pod racing, a sport that no human participates in. He comes to the attention of Qui-Gon Jinn when offering shelter from the sand storm. Qui-Gon quickly establishes that Anakin has special powers and gets the young boy to participate in the pod race of Boonta Eve in order to win the parts that the Jedi needs. Anakin has even built his own protocol droid as well as a Pod Racer and manages to win the pod race. Qui-Gon announces that Anakin is to come with him and the young boy leaves his mother. But the Jedi Council refuse to allow Qui-Gon to train him to be a Jedi. Anakin is integral in the battle against the Trade Federation on Naboo by accidentally knocking out the droid control tower. Obi-Wan Kenobi takes him on to be his Padawan when Master Qui-Gon is killed.
Shmi Skywalker - mother of Anakin and also a slave on Tatoonine. She tells Qui-Gon that Anakin was conceived without a father, promoting Qui-Gon to think Anakin is the boy of a long known prophecy to bring balance to the Force. Shmi allows Anakin to participate in the pod race though she truly hates it when he races. She convinces him to go with the Jedi when offered, sad but pleased to see her son make something more of himself.
Chancellor Finis Valorum - the leader of a Republic that has become fat with its own success, content with its own superiority, corrupt to the core. He increasingly becomes influenced by senators to compromise his own feelings and instincts by protocol. He relies on the Jedi to get things done but his own power is waning, making him a mere figure head. He wants to help the Queen of Naboo, but his tenuous position is at stake should he not follow the advice of others. He is crestfallen when she calls a vote of no confidence.
Watto - junkyard dealer, gambler and general miscreant. Watto is a shady fellow, wanting hard money and not Republic credits but he is thwarted by Qui-Gon and looses his best slave and a whole lot of money betting on the Pod Racers.
